I made my new desk out of 3/4" plywood and 2x4 legs. I stained it with Minwax Semitransparent Navy color. I wanted it to look the color of the deep ocean. Came out great!!

This is the video that made me stop watching this channel. Which is a pity, since I've both enjoyed and learned a lot from it. Let me explain why I'm not watching it any more. This video showed a really bad way of doing the refurbish. Which isn't a problem, if it would have been made as a joke video or if there were any mention that this shouldn't be used as a guide as how to do the refurbishment. Instead it was delivered as a serious video, the same kind of serious as all other videos on this channel. Presenting it that way makes me wonder how many of the technical videos can't be trusted, since it's now obvious to me that I don't know when I can trust the content and when I can't.

Jay, go to Lumber Liquidators and get a solid wood top. A decent butcher block is cheap as dirt there. Sand it, stain it (follow the suggestions others gave, don't tilt the sander, start at 80-120 and work up to ~400) then topcoat it. The hardest topcoats are pretty nasty to work with. A poly finish will work, but you'll have to redo it every few years as you wear through it. But that'll give you a great looking, tough as nails table. Sanding a veneer is awful, and very stress inducing.

Haven't done a desk yet (new summer project), but I built farmhouse style countertops in my kitchen using stud grade lumber that turned out amazing. Definitely suggest applying some type pre-stain treatment first, it makes the wood grain stand out so much more.

I made my desk out of a solid core wooden door, sanded it like this to smooth it out, and i used boat stain since its more moisture resistant and isnt prone to water circles like lots of other stains. Still going strong over a year later.

No offense but, 🤦‍♂️ !!! As an senior citizen fan/gamer ... who has decades of trial and error ... use minwax polyshade. Done and done, one step stain and protector (just apply it quickly). I finished my computer desk in 2001 and it still looks great. As The Wood Whisperer said ....... Other than that , you've helped me make my budget custom gaming rig so much better so thanks a million. 👍

I use birch kitchen counter top as my computer desk, To be honest with ya, if you try to refurbish your desk, since you done lots work, I can’t tell what the reason holding you back from use wood filler or potty to fill up the holes on the desk, I would definitely use it, if I got the sander like you have, but it would be better if you use 800~1000 grade sandpaper to polish your top once again, the difference between the finish is night and day, beach sand and bone ash! And to be straight of your Stein, it is way too much Stein you pour on the top, all you need just dip your brush and take good time do it slowly Anyway, enjoy your refurbished desk

Do you think there is glue added to the veneer? the amount of stain the wood is taking says to me there is lots of glue in the wood. if you actually want to stain that table to be a rich mahogany "you need to add stain to the clear coat"

Grew up in a house full of tools (well garage). Learned to do this shit. Still, great to see someone in the PC community bring it over. I think there's a lot of overlap in PC/Setup building and just general DIY, but I've seen so many people do things wrong. Planning to build my own corner desk. Not sure if i'll stain it yet, but looking forward to building a desk to suit my needs.

Ok, so I am a woodworker by trade and this video had a few things that triggered me. Starting with 220 grit is just a waste of time. Even on veneer, you can start with 120 or even 100 grit and just do a pass or two to get the worst of the surface imperfections out. If your veneer is a full 1/8" thick, good luck sanding through it before you get bored and decide to live with it. The fact that he used the sander at an angle to put more pressure in one spot is bad practice because like he said, it makes a dip, but it also makes for little swirly scratches in the surface of your piece that will pop out the second you apply a finish. The worst trigger for me is the lack of a clear coat over the stain. Oil based stains take an extremely long time to dry completely, and changes in conditions like humidity and temperature can bring pigment suspended in residual oil to the surface, even if you get it to the point where it leaves a towel unstained at first. Staining wood is just that; staining. Applying a stain simply applies a colour to the wood. It does not seal it or protect it. What you need for that is a top coat like polyurethane or lacquer or shellac. These will actually seal the wood and make sure the stain stays on the surface instead of rising to the surface and wiping off eventually. Most stains are also not food safe, so its better to just stay safe and use straight mineral oil and beeswax. TLDR; Jay good at cars, models and computers. Jay bad at woodwork tutorials. Good god this is a novel.

This is moronic. You're in America, where you can make over $100 per hour, and you waste your life on this. Just use a 4ft x 8ft piece of plywood as a topper and discard it when you don't like it anymore. Time is valuable.

I have not done this for my PC desk or anything like that, but I have had to do this for an old cedar box that was passed down to my wife. I also built a small portable streaming table for work so they could stream their live Zumba classes during the lockdown. I love working with wood and building stuff. I just recently bought a network rack to upgrade from the one I made from wood a few years ago.

I have one of the wooden desk tops from ikea, originally i just oiled it, but eventually i thought i’d give staining and varnishing a go. For like 2 months, i had to keep taking the varnish off because whenever i did a second coat, it would just keep getting this weird scaling effect. I even called the support line on the varnish tin and the guy with 20 something years experience couldn’t figure it out. (Instructions were followed). After the 3rd time removing the paint on varnish, i eventually tried the spray on stuff instead. It was sooooooooooo much easier, took far less time and still looked just as good as if I painted the varnish on. If you’re going to varnish something, just get the spray on stuff.

i would at least throw a coat or 5 of poly to help protect it this time unless you want more dings and scratches. honestly a few clamps plus some s4s wood done up at a lumberyard would make you a solid wood top surprisingly cheap if you lack a jointer planer and tablesaw.
